Homemade Dogfood
Making homemade dogfood is easier than you think and so much better for your pooch. When our puppy, Pepper, joined our family I made her homemade dogfood once a week. It is more time consuming than just reaching in a bag full of dry dogfood and dumping it into the food bowl but think about how much happier and healthier your dog will be! And it’s super easy!
If you don’t want to feed them this homemade dogfood at every meal, then you can use it as a supplement to take place of the dry stuff a couple times a week.
And the best part of making your own dogfood is that you can use ingredients that you already have at home.
This list of ingredients is very versatile and you can use a combination of some or all or pick and choose each ingredient based on what you have at the time. You can also switch it up from week to week.
I also use whatever I have in the fridge or freezer especially if we aren’t going to eat it due to freezer burn or it’s past it’s left over life. Dogs aren’t as picky as humans!
It’s a great way to clean out your fridge - left over meat balls, cooked chicken, rice from the Chinese take out, etc.
INGREDIENTS:
2 Cups of Rice - cooked
2-3 Cups of Oatmeal - cooked
Fresh Vegetables - carrots, celery, butternut squash, pumpkin, zucchini, potatoes, beans, corn, peas
Eggs - scrambled
Meat - Ground beef, chicken, pork
Bread
Water or Low sodium vegetable, beef, or chicken broth
My Process:
Cook the rice or oatmeal with water or broth.
Cook the meat.
Cook the vegetables.
Scramble the eggs.
I use the insert from my roaster oven to mix the ingredients in. Add the cooked rice or oatmeal first and then add all of the other ingredients in and mix it up. I add them in the order that I cook them in.
Then after it’s mixed really good, I let it cool off and put it in the large flat tupperware or rubbermaid brand plastic container and put one in the fridge and the rest in the freezer.
When I’m going to need some, I take them out of the freezer the day before and put it in the fridge or a couple hours before and let it sit on the counter to defrost.
Please be aware that certain vegetables, fruits, and nuts are toxic to dogs such as onions, garlic, rhubarb, grapes, and raisins. I’m sure there are more so use caution when choosing your ingredients.
I hope your pooch loves this homemade dog food as much as my dog does!
